Hairy times

A tuft of hair here, a ball of hair there. Especially in spring and autumn our pets lose a lot of hair. Brushing and combing is therefore especially important during the coat change.

When dogs and cats change coat

Hair goes through different stages of growth. When the hair reaches its length, growth stops. Now the hair is firmly anchored to the root. Several months pass before a new root is formed. Due to the growth of the new hair, the existing coat is shed and leads accordingly to the change of coat.

Strengthening from within

A balanced diet has a significant influence on the change of coat. Protein-rich food, biotin, linseed oil or salmon oil are natural supplements and support the organism of the animal in addition to regular care.

Coat care is the be all and end all

Depending on the breed, the change of coat in the dog is also different. For short-haired dogs, brushing once a week is quite enough. Daily grooming is very important for dogs with stick or stitch hair or with long coats. Brushing and combing removes dead hairs from the base and undercoat.

Dogs with rough or wire hair have a very dense, hard and bushy coat with an equally dense undercoat. In addition to normal grooming and brushing out the undercoat, these dogs need regular trimming. This is done with a special trimming knife, which is available in specialized stores. For a professional trimming is worth a visit to the groomer, who will explain the proper handling. Coat care begins in the nursery. Because the sooner you get the kitten used to grooming, the sooner it will accept it as a pampering program.

From wolf dress to dog coat

Does a dog need a dog coat or is it just a fashion trend? What is certain is that our domestic dogs have adapted to our lives for thousands of years and are bred accordingly. The original coat of the wolf is no longer present in most breeds. Also, staying in warm living rooms reduces the protection of the coat from the cold. Dogs with little undercoat and sparse fur must be protected from wetness and cold in cold temperatures. Recommended is a functional coat, waterproof and windproof. Especially if the dog has to wait longer and without physical exercise.

And the cat?

In cats, the change of coat is also very pronounced. The longer the hair, the more care the cat needs. Long haired cats require daily grooming, where for short haired cats brushing once a week is sufficient.
