To kick off the webinar series “Little Lunchies with Prof. Dr. Dick White – Surgical assistance for TPA”, the focus is on surgical instruments and their correct handling. Participants will learn the key components of a surgical instrument set, their respective areas of use and functions.

In addition, the webinar provides practical guidance on what matters when cleaning, maintaining and carefully checking instruments. Proper preparation and packaging, as well as subsequent sterilisation and its reliable monitoring, are also covered step by step.

Preparing the OR, patient and surgical field

A well-prepared operating theatre, correct patient positioning and a properly prepared surgical field create optimal conditions for a safe and efficient surgical procedure.

In the second part of the webinar series “Little Lunchies with Prof. Dr. Dick White – Surgical assistance for TPA”, everything revolves around practical preparation before an operation. It shows how the OR is set up according to the planned procedure and which devices, materials and other aids should be ready.

Another focus is correct patient positioning. Using common surgical procedures as examples, different positioning options are presented and suitable ways of supporting and securing the patient are explained. Typical positioning errors and how to avoid them are also discussed.

The webinar is rounded off with practical basics on placing a urinary catheter and aseptic preparation of the surgical field.

Asepsis and personal OR preparation

Hygiene and aseptic working are among the core foundations of professional assistance in the operating theatre. Proper personal preparation helps ensure sterile conditions, avoid contamination and support patient safety during the procedure.

The third part of the webinar series “Little Lunchies with Prof. Dr. Dick White – Surgical assistance for TPA” covers the most important basics of asepsis and shows how TPA prepare professionally for their tasks in the OR.

Topics include the requirements for suitable OR clothing and the correct use of cap, face mask and OR shoes. Personal hygiene and its importance for safe work in the operating area also play an important role.

Another focus is surgical hand disinfection and its correct performance in accordance with current hygiene guidelines. In addition, sterile donning of OR gown and gloves is taught. The open and closed gloving methods, as well as the correct procedure for contaminated or damaged gloves, round off the content of this webinar session.

Non-sterile assistance in the OR

Even outside the sterile OR area, assistants play an important role in ensuring a safe and well-coordinated surgical workflow. Forward planning, reliable checks and good coordination with the sterile team are particularly important.

The fourth part of the webinar series “Little Lunchies with Prof. Dr. Dick White – Surgical assistance for TPA” focuses on the tasks of non-sterile OR assistance during a surgical procedure. It explains how TPA can effectively support the surgical team before and during the procedure.

Topics include correct handling of sterile materials as well as preparation and functional checks of the required OR equipment. Important safety checks that should be carried out before an operation begins are also discussed.

During the procedure, non-sterile assistants help ensure that additional instruments and materials are available, operate required equipment and support the sterile OR team as needed. Further content includes patient safety measures, documentation of materials used, and careful counting and completeness checks of instruments, swabs and needles.

Airway emergencies and trauma

Acute breathing problems are among the greatest challenges in small animal clinics and require rapid, clearly organised action. This webinar provides veterinary support staff with a practical guide to safely recognising, monitoring and jointly managing airway diseases and injuries in emergencies.

Urinary tract emergencies and trauma

Acute urinary tract diseases are among the common emergency situations in small animal clinics and can range from functional blockages and injuries to severe damage to the urinary outflow tract. In this webinar, veterinary support staff receive a practical overview of relevant urological emergencies as well as basic nursing and supportive measures in day-to-day clinic operations.

Typical emergency presentations along the entire urinary tract are covered, including damage to kidneys and ureters, urinary stones, bladder ruptures and obstructions, as well as acute urethral disease in dogs and cats, including FLUTD. Using these case examples, participants learn which aspects are particularly crucial in acute situations.

Another focus is on nursing requirements in urological emergencies, understanding the underlying pathophysiological processes, and fluid therapy. Gastrointestinal emergencies and trauma

Acute gastrointestinal diseases are common and sometimes life-threatening emergency situations in small animal clinics. This webinar provides veterinary support staff with a practical overview of relevant gastrointestinal emergencies as well as nursing measures that are central to everyday clinic work.

Acute conditions and injuries along the entire digestive system are covered, including foreign bodies, lesions in the oropharynx, gastric dilatation-volvulus, intestinal perforations and large bowel obstructions. A particular focus is on feline megacolon.

Another focus is the nursing care of patients with gastrointestinal emergencies. Different forms of supportive nutrition are covered, as well as selected nursing interventions for typical conditions, for example in GDV, peritonitis, and in the care of cats with large bowel obstructions or megacolon.

Causes of wounds

Injuries are among the most common reasons for presentation in small animal clinics and can vary greatly in appearance and severity depending on the type of trauma. For successful wound management, it is crucial to consider various influencing factors, including the extent and location of the wound, the tissue structures involved, the degree of tissue loss, the level of contamination, and the vitality of the affected tissue.

This webinar provides practical guidance on how different wound types occur and how to assess them professionally. Topics include surgical and incisional injuries, lacerations and avulsion wounds, puncture and bite wounds, thermal damage, and iatrogenic wounds.

A particular focus is on structured wound assessment. Participants learn to realistically assess tissue loss and tissue quality and to correctly classify the significance of possible contamination. Building on this, it shows how the next steps in wound management can be sensibly planned and supported within the clinic team.

Wound healing

A solid understanding of wound healing forms the basis for effective, targeted management of injuries. Every wound goes through clearly defined healing phases, which largely determine which measures are appropriate and supportive at which time. In everyday clinic work, however, these biological processes are not always sufficiently incorporated into treatment planning.

This webinar clearly explains how the wound-healing process works and how this knowledge can be used for sound therapeutic decisions. The key phases of wound healing are presented – from initial haemostasis through inflammatory processes and tissue formation to structural stabilisation of the tissue. Topics include the role of coagulation, the formation of granulation tissue, epithelialisation and maturation of scar tissue.

Building on this, practical strategies for phase-appropriate wound management are presented. These include aspects such as wound cleaning and bandaging, targeted debridement, infection prevention, protection of sensitive tissue structures, and supportive guidance through the final healing phase.

Wound closure

The type of wound closure has a major influence on further healing, the risk of possible complications, and the functional and cosmetic outcome. This webinar offers veterinary support staff a practical overview of common wound-closure methods in dogs and shows how they can actively support the treatment process.

Topics include basic techniques of primary wound closure, proper management of wound tension, and strategies to reduce tissue dead space (“Dead Space”). The use of wound drains is also explained. In addition, concepts of secondary wound healing are presented, including suitable bandaging techniques and supportive measures for open wounds.

Another focus is on reconstructive procedures such as skin flap techniques and skin grafts. It explains when these methods are used, how they work in principle, and which nursing measures are required to optimally support the healing process.
