More well-being for your pet – with a fear-free visit to the vet
Most pet owners are familiar with possible problem situations when visiting the vet: A frightened dog pacing nervously up and down in the waiting room. A cat that refuses to leave its safe transport cage or a rabbit that hides and doesn’t want to be touched. Our solution for such scenarios is the Fear Free vet visit by specially certified vets.
A veterinarian who is a Fear Free Certified Professional® wants your pet to be happy when they walk through the office door.
“Fear Free” doesn’t mean that your pet will never experience anything unpleasant at the vet – it could be injured or ill – but it does mean that we do everything we can to reduce fear, anxiety and stress associated with examinations and treatments.

The “Happy Visit” for a first positive experience
During a “Happy Visit “* your dog should gain positive experiences and learn that a visit to the vet doesn’t have to be unpleasant. These special appointments are tailored to your dog and take place at an appropriate pace.
How does the “Happy Visit” consultation work?
You arrange a customized appointment, which is discussed in advance.
The visit is planned with the help of a preparatory form.
The activities can range from petting and treats to practicing certain treatments such as claw trimming, administering injections or dental examinations.
You and the vet decide together what will happen during the appointment.
*This is not a regular appointment; treatments and consultations do not take place. The “Happy Visit” costs CHF 35.
We look forward to your appointment at MeikoVet in Maienfeld or in Zollikon.

Perfectly prepared – fill out our questionnaire before the appointment
Please complete the following online form before your appointment. The more information we have in advance, the better we can respond to your pet’s needs and organize your visit in the best possible way.
To ensure a pleasant, anxiety-free and stress-free visit to the vet, our vet implements various measures and prepares the visit in advance. In the following articles, we have summarized for you what happens during a consultation according to the “Fear Free” concept, what is important and how you can also contribute to its success.
Here are 8 ways we help your pet stay comfortable and relaxed from arrival to departure.
Convenient waiting. Depending on the veterinary practice, there is a “dog lounge” or a raised “cat parking area”. Blankets enriched with pheromones are also available. Whenever you wish, you can wait outside or in the car and then be accompanied directly into the examination room, if necessary through a second entrance.
Relaxation in the air. Pheromones and aroma nebulizers release calming substances into the air, animal-friendly music has a calming effect on the animals’ central nervous system. (And perhaps yours too).
Eye contact is for you, not for your pet. Our team will initially avoid eye contact with your pet and focus on you instead. This makes your pet feel less stressed because it is not the center of attention and gives it time to explore its surroundings and get used to our presence.
Feasting is the order of the day! Bring your dog or cat in hungry, as our team will hand out lots of small, tasty treats to greet your pet and distract them from the procedures. We also offer special treats before anesthesia.
Playing at the vet. If your pet can forget about everyday life by playing, we also use toys as a distraction in addition to treats.
“Better together”. Whenever possible, we will carry out examinations and treatments directly in the examination room so that your pet is reassured by your presence.
A little extra help? If necessary, we will prescribe an anti-anxiety medication to make the car journey and visit to the surgery more pleasant for your pet.
Emotional acts. Our team will make a note of your pet’s emotional reaction to the visit. This will help us to know which treatments and techniques are best suited to reduce anxiety and stress next time. This will help us to make future visits even better.
We need your help to make your pet’s visit as stress-free as possible. The following tips should help you and your pet to cope with the visit together.
Hungry is good. Reduce the amount of food your pet is fed before a visit to the vet. This can help reduce nausea and improve treat acceptance during the examination.
Feasting is the order of the day! Bring lots (50-100) of your favorite treats. Lick pastes or chewy items are also welcome!
Toys or brushes. If your pet likes to play, take a great toy with you. If it relaxes during grooming, this can also help to calm it down in the practice.
Pheromones, valerian, camille, lavender. Pheromones, diluted essential oils such as lavender or camille and valerian can be sprayed onto bandanas or underlays. It is important that this is done 15 minutes before the contact with the animal.
Thunder Shirt. Some dogs feel safer and calmer with this body bandage. If your dog is familiar with this, he is welcome to come to us like this!
Lots of time and peace and quiet. If you are stressed, so is your pet.
Pre-consultation prescriptions. If your pet is afraidIf you have been prescribed solvents, make sure that they are administered at the correct time. If this does not work, there is no need to worry. We will discuss the best course of action together.
